World Cancer Day is one of the most recognized days around the world today. Its is very important to many people especially people with the conditions, the family of those with the conditions, and all the organizations that support this day. I want to write this post to inform people what cancer is, how to prevent it, what treatments are available, and maybe let people know where they can get help. Let people know that their are people that will help support them through their conditions. Before I start with all the information about cancer I would like to give a little information on the World Cancer Day itself.
World Cancer Day was established on February 4, 2000 at the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer, which was held in Paris. The Charter of Paris against cancer was created to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services and establish world cancer day itself. Each year there are more than 900 activities taking place in 10 different countries around the world. Some cities support the day by lighting up important landmarks in orange and blue. There are new themes for this day every couple of years. In 2019-2021 the theme is " I Am and I Will". This theme was chosen to help counter negative attitude and false beliefs that nothing can be done about cancer and instead promotes how our own personal actions can be powerful and impactful. Most of the major cities have some kind of 5k walk or something of that nature so if you want to join in on some of the activities and help support others just look up the activities for your area for the year. At the end of this post I am going to try and give a list of cancer hospitals and other services available in the major cities and hopefully it will help someone.
What Is Cancer?
⦁ Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer develops when the body's normal mechanism stops working. Old cells do not die and instead grow out of central, forming new abnormal cells.
How Can We Help Prevent Cancer?
1. Don't Use Tobacco
2. Protect Your Skin From The Sun
3. Eat A Healthy Diet
4. Maintain A Healthy Weight
5. Be Physically Active
6. Practice Safer Sex
7. Avoid Risky Behaviour
8. Get Immunized (HPV & Hepatitis Vaccines)
9. Know Your Family History
10. Get Regular Cancer Screenings
Now there is always help for cancer so don't ever think that there isn't. Here is a small list of treatment (I didn't list them all) for those with cancer.
1. Surgery- To remove as much of the cancer as possible
2. Chemotherapy- Drugs that kill cancer cells
3. Radiation Therapy- Is a high-powered energy beam that can kill cancer cells
4. Bone Marrow Transplant- Is used to replace diseased bone marrow
5. Immunotherapy- Uses your body's immune system to fight the cancer
6. Hormone Therapy- Is removing or blocking hormones to stop cancer cell growth
There are so many more treatments out there now that can help so if you need it try and find help don't give up. I am going to start a list of cancer hospitals but I probably won't get to all of them in this one post. I will post more of them each day if you want to keep and eye out for your state.
